Year 2020 starts off a new decade of intense energy, action and transformation with a Saturn/Pluto conjunction at 22° Capricorn on January 12, setting the stage for a transition of government, traditions, and long-standing institutions. Take that however you may, but after 2020, nothing will ever be the same for humanity. This conjunction will also be accompanied by Mercury and the Sun meaning there may be a huge news story or journalistic discovery made during this time.

But that’s not the only huge impact being made in 2020; Jupiter and Mars will be conjunct on that exact same degree come March 20, 2020. These two planets cooperate well in aspect, giving us a mature sense of ambition and compelling us to achieve our goals. At the same time, the Sun will enter into Aries, beginning the astrological new year with a great deal of positive energy.
However Mars being exalted in Capricorn during Jupiter’s fall is frustrating. Mars is prepared for work, yet Jupiter’s expansion is restricted in some manner. There is still something holding us back from just going full throttle, regardless of our desire to show our passion to the world. This is not necessarily a bad thing, as patience and a wisdom are needed after the crashing of familiar structures in January.
Shortly after on April Fool’s Day, Jupiter will meet with Pluto at the same time Mars will contact Saturn. I wonder what jokes these guys are playing on us?
Jupiter expands anything it touches, so the expansion of Pluto’s energy could mean a huge transformation of structures occurs during this time. Perhaps people will finally reap their long-awaited benefits from cryptocurrencies, as Pluto also represents money and riches. It could mean that money is made available to the multitude, transitioning the power from the 1% to the 99%. Or, justice may be dished out in roves, with Jupiter representing the law and Pluto standing for incorruptible judges.
Mars is still raring with his ambition from Jupiter, but Saturn is keeping a leash on that energy. The Mars/Saturn conjunction is like a teacher molding a student, strengthening him through practice and providing wisdom and experience. However this is only as effective as Mars is willing to heed Saturn’s advice. Whatever plans you may have in the works during this time of the year should be carefully considered and mulled over to ensure they are perfect. The 2020 opportunity is only going to come once in a lifetime, and you don’t want to miss it simply because of overlooking a small detail.
It also helps that Venus (at 27° Taurus) will be exactly trine to the midpoint of both conjunctions, giving events of this period a pleasant pass this time around. Perhaps our friends and family support us on our journeys, or maybe we will find ourselves being supportive of others. This will create a powerful connection with loved ones, securing our social circle for the next decade.
Mars will ingress into Aries on June 28, forming a sextile to Saturn (which will be retrograde at 0° Aquarius) and borrowing some of that advice Saturn gave to him earlier in April. Now is the time to act, signaled by the passionate planet entering the its home sign, the aggressive doer, with the “Just Do It” mentality ringing loudly in our ears. With Saturn retrograde, its controlling nature is slightly weaker, allowing Mars to reap both the benefits of directed action and wise decisions.
That is, if we have heeded Saturn’s previous lessons. This could be a second chance at innerstanding those lessons, as the sextile aspect here is much less intense than the conjunction aspect we experienced in April so we don’t feel as restricted as previously.
But whenever Mars enters Aries, we must be careful not to let our egos get the better of us. This is a time of high egocentric energy, when most people will be frustrated from the lack of moves they couldn’t make prior due to all the restrictions place on Mars and Jupiter (via Capricorn or Saturn). With the race gun firing, everyone is clamoring to leave the starting gates at the same time, and some people typically get elbowed so that others may achieve first place.
The sextile from Saturn does help to quell the flames a bit. Saturn sits in its sign of traditional rulership (Aquarius) where it deals with the structures of humanity. This energy is associated with setting up new foundations that benefit mankind and lead to progress, fulfilling a very necessary social role. So when you hear the gun fire and everyone starts sweating to get into first place, you would do best to think of long-term goals, establishments, and investments that you can build instead of getting caught up in the rat race. Saturn has been sculpting you and perfecting your passion for months, if not years; now you need to apply your passion responsibly and constructively to reap the most reward from it.
The forward momentum won’t last too long before we once again bump into an obstacle of some sort, as Mars goes retrograde September 9th, 2020. This is a time of physical weakness and of feeling a loss of passion, especially if Mars or Aries is very prevalent in your natal chart. A square from Saturn retrograde aspects the heavenly warrior, and square aspects usually represent irritations, annoyances. Perhaps old obligations, thoughts of the old paradigm that just vanished, or other fearful thoughts are pulling us back into a mode that no longer serves us. This weakening period will be a test of will to see just how badly we want a new system of things.
With Mars retrograde, we need to be extremely careful that we aren’t stepping on others’ toes to get our point across. The frustration of feeling incapable and physically drained is enough to make people explode because they can’t handle the pressure. Make sure that your ego is kept in check during this time.
Finally, Mars goes direct on November 14 2020, when we feel empowered again after an entire year of feeling subdued somehow. Thus, we can end the year, and begin the decade, with full awareness of our intentions for the future, for ourselves, and for the world.
